REPORT- ECE

1ST MEETING OF PHYSICS CLUB

7th November 2012

Here maybe of many the first dose of your bread and butter, more like the weekly obligation for cold sweetness. However I mean no comparison to the events which occurred here at GECB, the first actual and proper meeting of the Physics Club. Quite interestingly no lines were drawn and none assumed and all were allowed to interact freely during the entire session. The session which culminated brilliant minds, the future of the club, for the first time started off with a neat projected presentation by the Physics teacher cum head of the club Dr. Sibi. The clippings lead us, amidst many other things a video, much related to the Nobel Prize winners for Physics then year Serge Haroche and David J Wineland. The video showed the members, including me how atoms and photons were so woven together in the realm of research. Complex as it may be Dr. Sibi took his time to explain the details to us, inch by inch and step by step. When the presentation concluded, insights to the forthcoming events in the club were given. An interesting selection of pictures from last year’s club activities. The elegant session neared conclusion with a perfect playback of our batch’s group song for Kerala Piravi and if not the same , it was much better.
Things never retrogrened even during the final moments with an excellent imitation of our head Dr. Sibi, by one of the member Mr. Gokul S.
The much loved session came to an end with a short photo session near to the entrance, a section of the long façade, where the members with broad smiles posed more than once with the hea Dr. Sibi with a palpitating heart, and fresh memories of the irony in ambience. I point out that I and all my batchmates really enjoyed the session and are looking forward to the upcoming events.

REPORT - CE/IT

The Very First Meeting

8th November 2012

The IT and CE students and members of the Physics Club made their presence in the very first meeting of the club presided over by Dr. Sibi KS, Asst. Professor of the college from the Department of Physics. The long waited meeting of all the physics buffs was finally done on 8th November 2012. It could be very hardly guessed as to how fast the scheduled one hour meeting ended since the process was indeed a good one and the one hour ran on so unexpectedly.
After some of the members introduced themselves to the mater, the meeting improved with videos showed on the recent advancement in Physics. It would have been a real losshad we not been introduced to the Nobel Prize winners in Physics for the year. The video said how Mr.David.J.Wineland and Mr.Serge Haroche created another rage to the world by their tremendous collaboration and wonderful ideas on atoms and photons with the help of NIST.
Mr.Wineland, an average student himself, had genuine interest in Physics as a student. The video also said that Mr.Haroche used atoms to study photons while Mr.Wineland used photons to learn about atoms- a remarkable study which can lead the world of supercomputers to a world of quantum computers.
The meeting concluded with a photo session at five in the evening in the college courtyard.

FASCINATING PHYSICS

Report of the one-day orientation seminar on ‘Excitements in Physics’ dated 26-01-2012

A one-day orientation seminar on ‘Excitements in Physics’ was organized by the Department of Science, Government Engineering College, Barton Hill, Trivandrum on 26th January, 2012. The orientation seminar was inaugurated by Prof. K A Solaman (Former Head of Department, St. Michael’s College, Cherthala), who rendered a captivating talk on the topic ‘Excitements in Physics’. The speaker emphasized the vast scope of the ‘exciting’ subject Physics. His words were: ‘At one end, it studies phenomena at the small length scales involving electrons, protons etc; at the other end, it deals with astronomical phenomena at the scale of galaxies or even the entire universe.’ Several brain cracking thoughts were posed by Prof. K A Solaman to the students and students were motivated to purse higher end studies in their disciplines.

The function was presided over by Dr. Sheela S, Principal, Government Engineering College, Barton Hill, Trivandrum. Principal said that it is a necessity of time to develop our interest in our studies so that we could contribute in building our nation. Her message was thought provoking on the eve of Republic day. Dr. Sibi K S, Asst. Professor in Physics, was present the gathering. Sreya S R, Student of first year Electrical and Electronics Engineering, welcomed the invited speakers to the event.

The highlight of the orientation seminar was a talk on ‘SOFC: Next Generation Fuel cells’. The talk was conducted by Miss Mary Linsa K S, Assistant Professor in Physics, St. Teresa’s college, Ernakulam. The talk gave an impetus to the students to know more about Fuel cells underlying the various phenomena related to science involved in it. The students were encouraged to always have an out-of-the-way thinking at stuffs they encounter in their day-to-day life. Miss. Mary Linsa reminded the students to be not persons ‘with more degrees but less sense’.

The talk was followed by a Quiz competition which primarily comprised questions related to latest news in Physics. Quiz comprised of a preliminary round and five main rounds. Nithin Mani, First year Electrical Engineering student and Mahesh N, First year Electronic Communication student secured first prize followed by Aswathy S, First year Electrical Engineering student and Hema G, First year Electrical Engineering student secured second prize and third prize was given to Manu A K, First year Mechanical Engineering student and Kevin P V, First year Mechanical Engineering student.

Dr. Sibi K S, Asst. Professor in Physics, extended the vote of thanks. The whole session came to an end at 2 pm.
