A Day of Emotions, Connections, and Gratitude
Date: 21.11.2024
Today, I had the privilege of serving as the
Head-in-Charge of the Department of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at the
University of Kerala. It was a day filled with diverse experiences and deep
emotions, reminding me of the intricate threads that connect us all.
One of the most touching moments of the day came
from the story of Geetha, a daily wage staff member whose tenure of 60 days at
our department came to an end today. Over the past two months, Geetha became an
integral part of the department, not just as a staff member but as a
compassionate presence among the students.
Her story is one of resilience and profound love.
Geetha recently lost her daughter, who was of the same age as many of the
postgraduate students in the Department of Nanoscience. Perhaps this deep
personal loss made her interactions with the students so heartfelt; she saw
them as her own children. Today, as she bid farewell, the students came
together, pooling their resources to gift her a token of their appreciation.
The smiles on their faces spoke volumes of the bond they shared—a bond that
transcended roles and responsibilities.
Every smile tells a story, and today, Geetha's
story touched every heart present. Her departure reminded me of the unique
tales we encounter when we interact with a larger audience, each revealing a
mix of struggles, love, and resilience. Life, with its contrasts of joy and
sorrow, teaches us the value of unity and compassion. In these moments of
oneness, we find the true essence of living—moving forward despite the sadness,
celebrating the beauty of connections that brighten our paths.
Today, I felt proud to be part of this journey,
witnessing the warmth of our students, the affection of Geetha, and the
environment of mutual care that brings people of diverse backgrounds together.

Field Visit Report: Travancore Observatory Experience
On November 20, 2024, 80 postgraduate students from various departments of Kerala University participated in an enriching field visit to the Travancore Observatory. The session, spanning from 4:30 to 9:00 PM, was organized as part of the "Foundations of Astronomy" elective course. The event was graciously hosted by Jayakrishnan Sir, the Director of the Observatory, with technical assistance from Rahul and support from Ajesh Sir, who also delivered a module from the syllabus. Students explored the historic and scientific significance of the observatory, gaining a deep appreciation for its contributions to astronomy and meteorology. A highlight of the visit was a documentary screening on the observatory's legacy, followed by an interactive discussion that inspired students to connect theory with real-world astronomical practices.
The field trip provided a hands-on learning opportunity, allowing students to witness the historical instruments and understand their role in the development of observational astronomy in India. It also sparked enthusiasm among the participants to propose ideas for enhancing public engagement with the observatory. The evening ended on a high note with group photos and personal reflections, leaving a lasting impression of the importance of preserving such scientific heritage. This visit not only complemented the academic curriculum but also motivated the students to think critically about the ways to promote and utilize such facilities for broader scientific outreach.
National Workshop on
"Microbiome of the Coastal Environment: Structure and Functions"
Today at 10:00 AM, I had the privilege of attending the National
Workshop on "Microbiome of the Coastal Environment: Structure and
Functions," organized by the Department of Environmental Sciences,
University of Kerala. It was an honor to see the esteemed Padma Bhushan
awardee, Shri M. C. Dathan, Scientific Advisor to the Chief Minister of Kerala,
grace the event.
Keynote Insights by Shri M. C. Dathan
Shri Dathan emphasized the importance of studying coastal microbiomes,
presenting them as vital indicators of environmental health. He spoke
passionately about jellyfish and their remarkable sensitivity to environmental
changes—ranging from salinity and tidal shifts to pressure variations. These
creatures serve as natural sensors, reflecting even the slightest disturbances
in their habitat. His discussion underscored the interconnectedness of all life
forms within coastal ecosystems, and he highlighted how changes in the
microbiome could influence broader ecological processes.
The Role of Microbiomes in Coastal Ecosystems
Microbiomes are the hidden lifelines of coastal environments. These
microscopic communities play an essential role in maintaining ecosystem balance
by recycling nutrients, breaking down pollutants, and supporting marine
biodiversity. Shri Dathan likened the coastal microbiome to the human gut
microbiome, drawing parallels between their roles as thriving habitats. Just as
gut microbiomes ensure human well-being, coastal microbiomes are indispensable
for sustaining life in marine and adjacent terrestrial environments. Their
ability to adapt to changing conditions makes them a powerful focus for
environmental and climate research.
Encouragement to Participants
In his address, Shri Dathan encouraged participants to delve deeper into
the study of microbiomes and their multifaceted functions. He underscored how
such studies have the potential to unveil new strategies for conservation,
pollution control, and sustainable development. By expanding our understanding
of microbiomes, he argued, we can foster resilience in coastal ecosystems
