Introduction

The Department of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, University of Kerala, organized a five-day national workshop on emerging trends in nanotechnology from 20-24 May 2024. Inaugurated by Dr. Anilkumar, Registrar of the University of Kerala, the workshop was attended by 42 participants from various institutions across the country. Each day began at 10:00 am with lectures in the forenoon and lab sessions in the afternoon, featuring hands-on training in nanomaterial synthesis and characterization techniques.

Agenda and Content

The workshop included diverse topics related to emerging trends in nanotechnology, thoughtfully designed to ensure a seamless knowledge transmission seamlessly for the participants.

Day 1: 20 May 2024

The workshop commenced with a prayer song and a welcome address by Dr. I. Hubert Joe. The inaugural session included a presidential address by Prof. (Dr.) K. S. Anilkumar, highlighting the significance of nanotechnology. Dr. E. Shaji, Dr. G. M. Nair, and Dr. K. S. Sibi also delivered felicitations. Dr. S. R. Sarath Kumar concluded the session with a vote of thanks.

The first lecture by Dr. S. R. Sarath Kumar focused on "Introduction to Nanomaterials," followed by a session on "Synthesis of Nanomaterials." Afternoon lab sessions included analysis of co-precipitation, thin film deposition, SEM, XPS, EDAX, AFM, XRD, and Raman Spectroscopy.

Day 2: 21 May 2024

Dr. Jijimon discussed "Synthesis of Nanomaterials," exploring various techniques. Dr. Sibi K. S. covered "Characterization of Nanomaterials," focusing on XRD, SEM, and EDS. Afternoon lab visits provided practical exposure to synthesis processes and advanced characterization techniques.

Day 3: 22 May 2024

Dr. Rakhi R. B. presented on "Nanostructure Electrode Materials for Energy Storage," followed by Dr. Savitha Pillai S.'s lecture on "Emerging Applications of Nanomagnetic Materials." Afternoon lab sessions included hands-on training in thermal evaporation, UV-visible NIR spectroscopy, co-precipitation techniques, Raman spectrophotometer, X-ray diffractometer, SEM, TEM, and XPS.

Day 4: 23 May 2024

Dr. Deepa K. G. discussed "Nanomaterials in Solar Photovoltaics," highlighting solar cells and their applications. Dr. I. Hubert Joe's session on IR and Raman spectroscopy followed. Afternoon lab sessions included XRD, FTIR, Raman, hydrothermal and co-precipitation synthesis, thin film deposition, UV-VIS spectroscopy, SEM, EDAX, XPS, and AFM.

Day 5: 24 May 2024

Dr. S. R. Sarath Kumar delivered a session on X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), followed by a demo presentation on Origin software by Ms. Alice and supported by research scholars. The workshop concluded with a Valedictory session by Dr. Sabu, Dean of the University of Kerala, who emphasized the future potential of nanotechnology. Certificates were distributed, and participant feedback highlighted the insightful talks and practical lab sessions.
