Updates-Events

Alumni meet 2019 was conducted at Auditorium, Department of Physics on February 19, 2019. The details of the events are given in the brochure.

I thank the alumni for their presence and the wishes dedicated to the success of this pilot program towards a grand together in 2020 as the golden jubilee celebration of our department is fast approaching. Professor V K Vaidyan, Former HOD, was the chief guest of the morning session. He said that with technology fast advancing it is possible to get a connection with all the luminaries and visionary who are associated with the department since it has an illustrious history from the 1970s. Vaidyan Sir officially inaugurated the event and Dr G Subodh extended the presidential address to the gathering. The idea behind these gathering is to be inspired. Yes, we all have a teacher who inspired. This day is the tribute to them who made our stay in the campus a memorable one. In the afternoon session, we had Prof. Balan who was one among the first teachers in the department. Balan Sir is a true teacher in every spirit. I had been informed early by one of his students that even though our department started with 11 excellent academicians as professors, Balan sir class was always having full attendance since students didn’t want to miss him in action. And today too, he keeps such a passion that I was surprised to see the way he explains the concept “Impulse” with such vigour. I should say that I listen to him so keenly not because it was my topic of interest but because he was passionate about what he talks. Dear friends, if someone speaks passionately, then it doesn’t matter what he speaks, there is always something joyful to take away.

The field visit to the observatory was arranged on January 23 as a part of the elective course “Foundation of Astronomy” offered by the Department of Physics. There were around 50 participants. The main highlight was observing distant galaxies, planets and moon using Celestron telescope. The program was a delightful experience for we had ample time to interact since it was extending till January 24 morning. There were suggestions, discussion among professors from Economics, English and even philosophy. Thanks to all participants and all the students of XERXES who were behind this venture. On January 25, six students from graduate college, Kannur visited the department of physics as a part of the walk with the scholar program. All were introduced to research facilities like XRD, VSM, PL, UV as well as Electronics and Advanced Physics Lab. Photos of the some are uploaded herewith. I acknowledge sincere cooperation from research scholars and first and second-year MSc students for the hospitality they offered to the visiting students.

On January 25, Independence Day as well as on February 16, I was able to attend the independence celebration at St. Joseph’s College, Alappuzha and also to deliver an invited talk on scientific temperament as a part of Walk with the scholar program in the college.
