Inaugural
Function
The inaugural function
was started on 10:00 am. The welcome address was given by Dr. V. Biju, Head,
Department of Physics. He wholeheartedly welcomed the distinguished guests,
researchers, teachers and students. Dr. Ashalatha S Nair, research Director,
UoK inaugurated the two day national seminar by releasing the proceedings.
Technical
Session
The technical sessions
was started at 10:15 am with the invited talk of Dr. Prabhakar Rao P, Chief
Scientist and Head, NIIST on SEM and EDS. The session was focused on the theory
and instrumentation. During the session,
Manoj Mohan from Department of Optoelectronics asked why the SEM is limited on
surface morphology. Dr. Rao clarified that SEM is focused for surface
description and we can use TEM for bottom morphology. The session was concluded
by Dr. Sibi K S, Organizing secretary of AMCT’15.
The meeting was dispersed for tea break at
11:50 am.
The session continued
at 12:10 pm with the invited talk by Dr. Yoosaf Karuvath, Scientist, NIIST on
AFM. He was more focused on the instrumentation rather than theory.
After the lunch break,
the session continued at 2:30 pm. Dr. Sibi K S ,Assistant Professor, Department
of Physics, UoK , made an oral presentation on “Electron microscopy: An
indispensable tool for material characterization”
At 2:40 pm the Dr. C.
Sudarsanakumar, Professor, M.G. University made a talk on “Symmetry in Crystal
Research”. He simply told the story of X-ray diffraction, symmetry elements in
crystal structure , etc. The talk was more fundamental and it clearly focused
on the concepts. During the interactive session Amritha, MSc student from
department of Physics, UoK, asked why the crystal structure in the X ray
diffraction pattern was in the reciprocal lattice. And another doubt was what
the difference between real IR and FTIR was. It was clarified that in the FTIR,
the time domain is converted into frequency domain.
After the tea break the
people were again gathered for paper presentations.

The session was chaired
by Dr. G Subodh, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Physics. UoK. Each student was allotted 10 minutes for
presentation. Following scholars presented their papers:

REPORT 28/03/2015
09:45 am
The two day national
seminar on “Advanced Materials Characterization and Techniques” was continued
on the second day with the invited talk by Dr, Manoj Raama Varma, Principal
Scientist, NIIST on “HRTEM”. Interesting features observed through HRTEM like
grain boundaries, twin boundaries etc had been discussed and physics of these
observations were discussed in the lecture.
During the interactive
session, Athul R T from Dept. of Physics, UoK, asked whether there was any
damage caused by the magnetic nature on the sample. Dr. Varma clarified that if
there were any chemical changes, then damage would cause. But the magnetic
field is well designed to prevent such mutations.
Dr. V. Biju, Head,
Dept. of Physics, UoK, asked why magnetic lenses were versatile than the normal
electrostatic lenses. It is because electrostatic lenses need high voltage. He
then asked about the line width and the source for field emission.
At 11:40 am the invited
talks in the two day national seminar on “Advanced Materials Characterization
and Techniques” was concluded by Dr. Sibi K S, Organizing secretary, AMCT’15.
After the tea break the
session was opened for poster/paper presentations.

Vote
of Thanks
Respected HOD, Dr. V Biju, Dr. G Subodh, other
faculties and delegates, non-teaching staffs, dear students, researchers,
ladies and gentle man
It is a privilege and great joy for me to extend a
vote of thanks to all those who have contributed in one way or other to make
this workshop a success.
Ladies and Gentleman, Dr. V Biju, HOD, has been the
driving force behind the whole process. His vision, interest and hard work has
created another success story. I wish to thank him for the efforts he has put
in to develop this seminar to reality on a challenging field of advanced
materials characterization techniques.
My Colleagues, especially, Dr. G Subodh, Dr. IN
Jawahar, Dr. Udayachandran Thampy, Mr. Sujith and our students M.Sc. (First
Year/Second Year) and M Phil students have worked extremely hard, both in the
foreground and background. Organizing a two day national seminar with pioneer
researchers/ scientists/ teachers and students is not at all an easy task. You
deserve congratulations for a job well done.
The Programs on XRD, SEM, TEM, EDS, AFM provided intellectual
inputs which ensured information sharing and justified the motto of the seminar
“Excellence through Quality Research”. You have guided us in the right direction
and we appreciate and understand that you have taken time out of your very
important schedule to contribute to this seminar and some have even travelled
at very short notice. On this occasion, I wish to Thank Dr. P Prabhakar Rao, Dr.
Yoousaf Karuvath, Dr. Manoj Raamavarma and Dr. C Sudharshan for the invited
plenary talks. I also acknowledge the support of office staffs especially our
A.O madam, Mrs. Ushakumari as well as our Remachechi. Thank you for your contribution.
I also acknowledge the contributions of all those
who has presented papers in this seminar. Teachers/ students/ researchers/
scientist from interdisciplinary subjects have participated actively throughout
the workshop. It was what was expected and we would like to see this kind of
close co-operation in coming days.
I also wish to thank all the students who have whole
hearted attended the seminar. What is decided here would have direct
implications for your future and the interest and enthusiasm you have shown is
indeed a good sign for the future
Before concluding, let me express our sincere
gratitude to Prof. Ashalatha S. Nair (Research Director, UoK) for her guidance
and encouragement and appreciate the sponsorship given by DST-PURSE program
Thank you all for your kind co-operation
Cheers
Sibi K S
