CONGRATZ.... Our dearest friend JANI BIJU BABJAN  (S1S2 IT) won second prize comprising of Rs 3000/-, Momento and Certificate in IEEE PES State Level Quiz organised by TKM College of Engineering and co-sponsored by KSEB Officers Association & Lumens Electronics Kollam. It was a 4 level programme with 60 students from 18 colleges across Kerala. 16 students were selected for first level and 8 were short listed for the Grand Finale. Also congrats to all four GECB students who reached the first 16 and the 3 who reached the final 8.

I welcome to all my new students to physics club, Govt Engineering College, Barton Hill. Let us make our college a new place of innovative ideas and practical thoughts.  Let us make it a better place .....

Degenerate Matter

Degenerate matter is a bizarre form of exotic matter created in the cores of massive stars, where atoms or even subatomic particles are packed so closely that the primary source of pressure is no longer thermal but quantum - dictated by limitations set by the Pauli exclusion principle, which asserts that no two particles can occupy the same quantum state. It is also useful in some circumstances to treat conduction electrons in metals as degenerate matter, because of their high density. Degenerate matter, specifically metallic hydrogen, has been created in a laboratory before, using pressures over a million atmospheres (>100 GPa) . Degenerate matter is unique in that its pressure is only partially dictated by temperature, and pressure would in fact remain even if the temperature of the matter were decreased to absolute zero. This is quite different than the ideal gases we learn about in physics class, where temperature and pressure/volume are closely related. -K A Solaman

Flaw Found in Neutrino Test

R esearchers have found a flaw in the technical setup of an experiment that startled the science world last year by appearing to show particles traveling faster than light. The problem may have affected measurements that clocked subatomic neutrino particles breaking what Einstein considered the ultimate speed barrier. Two separate issues were identified with the GPS system that was used to time the arrival of neutrinos at an underground lab in Italy, James Gillies, spokesman for the  European Organization for Nuclear Research , or CERN, said Wednesday. One could have caused the speed to be overestimated, the other could have caused it to be underestimated, he said. “The bottom line is that we will not know until more measurements are done later this year,” Mr. Gillies said. -K A Solaman See links http://www.dawn.com/2012/03/ 18/einstein-can-rest-easy-as- neutrinos-obey-speed-limit. html http://timesofindia. indiatimes.com/world/europe/ Einstein-proved-right-in- retes...

Inviting all my students to write articles for our physics club

Image
Dear students I was going to see you all today but as it was a strike I couldn’t make to any of the classes. Just a few minutes before this post, I had a call from one of my students who wanted to participate in posting articles in our blog site. It appears that several of my students would like to make this blog site an active arena of discussing subjects related to physics and its fascinating world. Last week we had an orientation program and we had a nice time together. So today I want this letter to reach all my students so that if you have something in your mind related to nature, related to physics or any science around us, scribble it in a piece of paper and never be in a doubt to sent it to illuminathiphysics@gmail.com , so that we, the people with different ideas, can come together on a common platform to discuss, participate in more activities related to science. Have you got anything???? I am planning to make you all in the editorial board of this blog site. w...

Physics is an exciting and rewarding field of study. It explores many deeper mysteries of the universe to smaller world of atoms. It can lead to a wide range of intriguing career and employment opportunities. Physics club, GECBH, is a volunteered organization which provides a platform to students in GECBH to come together and share their experience as a student on the area of astrophysics to quantum world. We are a small class, dedicated members, active and friendly to physics. We are trying to bring a platform of togetherness in the experimental and theoretical physics. We would be happy to share our thoughts in this fascinating field of physics. Dr.Sibi.K.S,   Asst. Prof. in Physics, GECBH, Trivandrum
